Emma Murray

Prior to training to become an intimacy choreographer for live performance, Emma (she/her) has been working independently in the fields of choreography and performance, collaborating with artists across artistic disciplines and cultural divides for over 20 years.

Emma, originally from Aotearoa, NZ is based in Bern, Switzerland, has an a MA in Contemporary Art Practice and brings her extensive experience in professional dance and theatre contexts to the work of intimacy.

Being a dancer, she recognises the need for vulnerability and trust in a choreographic process, and how consent forward practices help make that possible. She also recognises artistic process navigates unknowns and sometimes discomfort which in turn supports the idea of defining thresholds or boundaries before they are reached.

She currently is the recipient of support from the City of Bern to research Intimacy in dance contexts  and exchanges with practitioners from the fields of performance, academic, pedagogy, curation, concert and inclusive dance. She became a certified Intimacy Choreographer for Live Performance with Intimacy Professionals Association in 2024.

Some of Emma's Intimacy Choreography for Live Performance credits include; Faust, Vorarlberger Landestheater, Austria, Nachwuchs Tanz Bern (Workshop for young, vocational dancers), PT Basel (Laboratory for professional dancers on Agency, Boundaries and Consent in Dance Contexts) Dancing Intimacies; Research & Collaboration with Dance Anthropologist, Dr. Claire Vionnet with the support of SSUDK, Bern Switzerland.
