Sara Brodie

Sara (she/her) is a New Zealand Arts Laureate recognised for her work as a director and choreographer in opera and theatre. She grew up in a theatrical environment, and live performance has been career for the past 35 years. She has also worked as an actor, dancer, movement director, teacher, actor’s agent, and, since 2019, as an intimacy choreographer with the advent of the role.

Sara is an accredited Intimacy Choreographer for Stage with IPA, and has also trained with Intimacy Directors International UK. She has a Master of Arts in Theatre from Victoria University, Wellington, NZ where her thesis focused on Laban Movement Analysis for performers. Sara finds Laban’s language of movement a useful lexicon for choreographing intimacy. She was the first teacher of the yoga based practice, Body Balance, for Les Mills Gym in Australasia.

During the Covid years she was the Programme Leader of the New Zealand Nation Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art. She has taught intimacy workshops for live performance in training institutions and opera companies. Sara works internationally in Europe, China, USA, and Australasia. She has dual New Zealand and British citizenship.
